The Story
Pfc Matthew Walsh was killed in action on 13 June 1944, serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. On 13 June 1944, the 116th Infantry Regiment, of which this unit's Regimental Troops were part, continued pressing its attack in Normandy, moving to envelop St. Clair-sur-l'Elle from the southeast. That day the regiment captured Couvains, and afterward began organizing the newly won ground for defense. While the surviving records describe these actions at the regimental level rather than detailing the specific role of Regimental Troops, this movement and consolidation reflect the operations this element was supporting during that period. Pfc Walsh was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
