The Story

Sgt Kenneth Payne was killed in action on 25 June 1944, serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. By late June 1944, the 116th Infantry had been reinforced enough that the regiment was able to pull one of its battalions off the front line and place it in reserve. That withdrawn battalion began working on infantry-tank coordination, training specifically for the kind of hedgerow fighting that had proven so costly in the Normandy countryside. The remaining elements of the regiment continued to hold their positions on the line. Records from this period reflect the regiment's overall disposition rather than the specific activities of any single company within it that day. Sgt Payne was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
