Pfc William Weaver was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. On the morning of June 6, 1944, the unit's landing craft reached the shore on schedule at 0720, but a navigation error placed it well left of its assigned objective at Les Moulins, inside the 2nd Battalion's sector. Sandbars and tidal action separated the seven boat teams into roughly three scattered groups that would not fully reunite until the men had pushed well inland. Casualties on the beach itself were relatively light, though the fighting to clear the sea wall and the wire beyond it proved costly, claiming several men to sniper fire as the unit worked its way forward. The survivors joined stray teams from other companies to reduce enemy positions, reassembled northwest of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, and spent the afternoon attacking toward Les Moulins along the coast road, held up by heavy fire before digging in for the night on the high ground overlooking the village. Pfc Weaver was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
