Tec 5 Richard Palmer was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. On D-Day, the 116th Infantry Regiment, of which this battalion was a part, came ashore near Exit D-1 and pushed inland toward St. Laurent-sur-Mer, working to secure the beach exit before turning to clear German defenses along the shore. One element of the regiment advanced as far as Vierville-sur-Mer that day. By nightfall the regiment's battalions had settled into positions spread along this stretch of coast - one along the road west of Vierville-sur-Mer, one about a hundred meters west of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, and one just north of the town - though surviving records do not specify which of these positions this particular battalion occupied. Tec 5 Palmer was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
