The Story

Pvt Hilliard Guy was killed in action on 24 June 1944, serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment. On 24 June 1944, the 115th Infantry held an active defense line north of St. Lô, part of a stretch running from June 20th to the 30th during which the regiment consolidated its forces and absorbed newly arrived replacements into its ranks. Rather than advancing, the men held their positions while patrols went out under cover of darkness to probe enemy strength and movements, gathering intelligence on the German forces arrayed opposite them. The after-action report for this period does not break down movements on a day-to-day basis, so the exact activities of Regimental Troops on this particular date were folded into the broader work of holding the line and readying the regiment for what lay ahead. Pvt Guy was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
