The Story

Pfc Hetzel McBride was killed in action on 29 June 1944, serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment. On 29 June 1944, the 115th Infantry held its ground south of La Forge as elements of the 3rd Armored Division passed through its lines at 0900 hours to press an attack on high ground several hundred yards ahead. The regiment's battalions remained in their positions throughout the action, serving as a base for the armored thrust, and while there they endured heavy and sustained German artillery and mortar fire. It was a day of holding firm under fire rather than advancing, with the regiment's men exposed to the shelling as the battle unfolded around them. Pfc McBride was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
