The Story

Sgt Nello Regni was killed in action on 12 June 1944, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment. On 12 June 1944, the 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry, was ordered into an attack across the Elle River, with the jump-off delayed from 0500 to 0800 after German artillery struck the assembly area. The battalion's push on the right stalled short of the river, and its men found themselves cut off near Les Fresnes, surrounded by German forces. They held on and kept fighting even as ammunition ran low, eventually breaking free and falling back to the north side of the river, where a renewed attempt later that afternoon was also driven back. Because this account comes from battalion-level records rather than a company-specific report, the exact experience of any one company within this action cannot be stated with certainty. Sgt Regni was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
