The Story

2nd Lt Stanley Thomas was killed in action on 18 June 1944, serving with Cannon Company, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 18 June 1944, the 175th Infantry Regiment was operating in the vicinity of Hill 108, where the regiment's 1st Battalion found itself cut off from the rest of the unit for much of the day under sustained enemy mortar and artillery fire. The broader regimental troops would have been contending with the disruption this isolation caused to communication, coordination, and support across the line. Conditions that day were marked by heavy shelling and the difficulty of maintaining contact between separated elements of the regiment. 2nd Lt Thomas was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
