The Story

Pvt Moone was killed in action on 28 June 1944, serving with HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 28 June 1944, the 175th Infantry Regiment held its position in the salient on Hill 108, roughly three miles from St. Lô, a stretch of ground that had become a fixed point of contention in the fighting. The regiment turned back one major enemy counter-attack along with several smaller probing attacks during this period, holding the line despite the pressure. Battalions within the regiment rotated through the exposed forward position as part of this defense, though the after-action report does not spell out the exact schedule of which unit held the line on any given day. Pvt Moone was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
