The Story

Sgt Eugene Gehly was killed in action on 13 June 1944, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 13 June 1944, 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry held isolated high ground south of Montmartin-en-Graignes as part of a task force cut off from the main line. During the morning, a battalion of paratroopers moved up on their right flank and temporarily eased the pressure, but the paratroopers later pulled back, leaving the battalion to face the enemy alone once again. Rations and ammunition had to be dropped to them from the air to keep the position supplied, and with a German Panzer division reported closing in, the battleship USS Texas fired its 16-inch guns into Montmartin-en-Graignes in support, the shells landing without striking the battalion's own men. Sgt Gehly was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
