The Story
Pvt Walter Geringer was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. On the morning of June 6, 1944, the battalion left the USS Henrico at 0515 hours and landed on Beach "Easy Red" near Colleville-sur-Mer, France, straight into heavy enemy fire. Fighting through fierce resistance, the men reduced an enemy strongpoint and pushed forward to the outskirts of Colleville-sur-Mer before digging in to hold a defensive position as night fell. The day's fighting came at a heavy cost: thirteen enlisted men killed, seven seriously wounded, and two officers and twenty enlisted men lightly wounded, with one of the lightly wounded remaining at his post rather than being evacuated. Pvt Geringer was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
