The Story
Pvt James Dunnham was killed in action on 19 June 1944, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 19 June 1944, the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry, was in the process of pulling back from the front lines near Hill 108 after being relieved by the 3rd Battalion overnight. The battalion moved into a position just to the rear of the defended area, taking advantage of somewhat less exposed ground following days of fighting in that sector. This shift represented a brief respite from direct engagement rather than a full withdrawal from the battle, as the unit remained close by in support of the ongoing effort. Pvt Dunnham was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
