The Story

Pvt Bernard Jarvis was killed in action on 08 June 1944, serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 8 June 1944, the 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry, was called into action in the late afternoon to help clear out a stubborn German position at St. Germain-du-Pert, where enemy troops were dug in alongside mobile 88mm guns. Around 1600 hours the battalion was committed to the fight, and after hours of hard combat the strongpoint was overcome and German forces were pushed back across a nearby causeway. The fighting that day was described as heavy, reflecting the difficulty of the position the battalion helped to reduce. Pvt Jarvis was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
