The Story

T/Sgt Arthur Manning was killed in action on 19 June 1944, serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On the night of 18-19 June 1944, the 3rd Battalion moved into position on Hill 108, relieving the 1st Battalion, which had been holding that ground. The changeover was carried out under cover of darkness, with the 3rd Battalion taking responsibility for defending the hill through the early morning hours of the 19th. This relief placed the battalion directly into the contested terrain that had been the focus of recent fighting in the area.
