The Story

Pvt Billie Colbert was killed in action on 21 June 1944, serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 21 June 1944, the 175th Infantry was holding the salient at Hill 108, a forward position roughly three miles from St. Lô that had become the focus of repeated enemy pressure. The regiment's battalions rotated through this exposed ground, defending it against one major counter-attack and several smaller probing assaults during this period. The after-action report does not spell out the exact rotation schedule for each unit during these days, but it confirms the position was held under sustained enemy pressure throughout. Pvt Colbert was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
