2nd Lt Carl Wamser was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company A, 743rd Tank Battalion. On the morning of June 6, 1944, Able Company brought its waterproofed Sherman tanks—several fitted with bulldozer blades—onto Omaha Beach across all four assault sectors, following Baker and Charlie Companies ashore. Under heavy fire, the company's commander left his tank to guide the tanks on foot through the beach obstacles, and the unit worked to provide covering fire for combat engineers struggling to clear the way inland. For roughly sixteen hours the company remained pinned on the beach as the tide rose and fell, unable to move off until the road block at Exit Dog-1 was finally destroyed that evening, allowing the tanks to push forward toward the interior. 2nd Lt Wamser was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
