Charles A Johnson

Cpl Charles Johnson was reported missing in action on 09 June 1944, serving with Company A, 743rd Tank Battalion. On D-plus-Three, the 743rd Tank Battalion continued its push south of Maisy in support of the Rangers assigned to clear a stubborn line of German pillboxes there. Baker Company, having rested the previous day, led the advance and helped the Rangers overwhelm the position, resulting in the capture of 125 German soldiers, the largest haul of prisoners the battalion had seen in the campaign to that point. That evening, Able Company took an additional 40 prisoners, who gave themselves up to the battalion's recovery vehicle, a stripped-down Sherman fitted with salvage gear and a dummy gun barrel, armed only with a machine gun. By nightfall the entire battalion had regrouped and camped together near Maisy. Cpl Johnson was reported missing in action that day.
