Tec 5 Emanuel Steiner was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with H&S Co, 121st Engineer Combat Battalion. On the morning of June 6, 1944, the battalion went ashore at Omaha Beach in the Dog Green and Dog White sectors as part of the 116th Infantry Combat Team, landing directly into heavy mortar, artillery, and machine-gun fire since no infantry had yet cleared the way. Two platoons came in first from landing craft at 0710, followed shortly by an advance element of headquarters from a landing craft that took a direct artillery hit just as it began unloading, inflicting roughly 50 percent casualties on that group and destroying most of its equipment. Despite these losses, the men worked to regroup on the beach and gather whatever material remained to carry out their engineering tasks. By nightfall, the headquarters and Company B elements had made their way inland to bivouac just south of Vierville-sur-Mer. Tec 5 Steiner was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
