The Story
Cpl Vincent Makarczyk was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company C, 121st Engineer Combat Battalion. On the morning of June 6, 1944, Company C came ashore on Omaha Beach in the Dog Green and Dog White sectors, with one platoon landing alongside a Company B platoon roughly ten minutes after the initial assault waves. The company commander was killed almost immediately upon leaving his landing craft. Two more platoons followed at midmorning on Easy Green, arriving by landing craft with bulldozers and explosives, and the surviving men of Companies B and C then pushed toward Exit D-1 to help clear it for vehicle traffic off the beach. By nightfall, Company C had been assigned to clear a transit area west of Vierville-sur-Mer, completing roughly half that work before making camp there for the night. Cpl Makarczyk was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
