The Story

On 19 June 1944, near grid 526683, the company took part in a coordinated assault against a fortified enemy strongpoint. Advancing roughly 300 yards under heavy mortar and artillery fire, the men pressed forward before being forced to pull back, ultimately holding a position just slightly ahead of the line from which the attack had begun. The action reflected the intense resistance encountered that day and the difficult, exposed conditions under which the engineers operated alongside the attacking force.
