Andrew B Mapes

T/5 Andrew Mapes was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with HQ&HQ Co, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. On the morning of June 6, 1944, the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry pushed inland from the beach toward Colleville-sur-Mer, working through resistance that included numerous snipers along the way. By 12:33 that afternoon the battalion had secured the town, a milestone reported up to the Division, and by 3:30 p.m. it had already moved beyond Colleville-sur-Mer toward its next objectives further inland. The advance continued that day with elements of the battalion reaching positions further to the east, setting the stage for further movement in the days that followed.
