Joseph Stellato

Pfc Joseph Stellato died of wounds on 10 June 1944, serving with Company C, 1st Engineer Battalion. On the morning of June 6, 1944, Company C (with its 1st Platoon detached to Combat Team 26) began transferring ashore at Omaha Beach by landing craft, with the first elements reaching the sand by 1100 and the remainder completing the landing by late afternoon. Once ashore, the company worked alongside Company A clearing an exit road off the beach, and by early afternoon a platoon had swept and repaired a stretch of roadway and prepared a vehicle transit area near the beach, finding no mines in the process. The day's work came at a cost, as several men were wounded and evacuated during the landing and subsequent operations. Pfc Stellato was wounded in this action and died of wounds on 10 June 1944.
