The Story
Capt Leo Apanasewicz died of wounds on 15 June 1944, serving with Company A, 1st Medical Battalion. On the morning of 6 June 1944, elements of the 1st Medical Battalion remained offshore aboard the vessels of the Bristol Channel Force convoy, positioned off Omaha Beach but not yet permitted to land. This group, made up of the Battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, the Division Medical Supply section, and a pair of ambulances each from Companies A and B, waited at sea while the invasion unfolded on the shore below. Because the Battalion's collecting companies had been attached to their respective combat teams for the landing, their specific actions on this day were carried out and recorded separately under those commands rather than as part of the Battalion's own direct account. Capt Apanasewicz was wounded in this action and died of wounds on 15 June 1944.
