Martin U Acosta

Pfc Martin Acosta was killed in action on 09 June 1944, serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment. On this day the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry, was relieved from its previous position and moved by column to a new assembly area southeast of Mosles before launching an attack at 1400 hours. Over the following four hours the battalion pushed through a difficult landscape of small, hedge-bordered fields against determined German resistance, reaching the Trevieres-Bayeux road by 1800 hours and breaking a German company in the process. The advance continued into the evening, with one company swinging around the battalion's flank to press the pursuit, crossing the Tortonne River, seizing Croway, cutting the Paris-Cherbourg railroad, and securing the Bayeux-Le Molay road in a three-mile drive south. While these actions are recorded at the battalion level, they reflect the general operations in which this company took part that day.
