The Story

Pfc John Malone was killed in action on 07 June 1944, serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment. On 7 June 1944, the 3rd Battalion, 18th Infantry moved inland from the Normandy beaches following the 1st Battalion, with orders to take the town of Mandeville. By midnight the battalion had dug in and established defensive positions for the night, having advanced steadily through the day. That evening the battalion turned back a German counter-attack, suffering only light casualties while taking a number of prisoners. Pfc Malone was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
