The Story
Pvt Edward O'Brien was killed in action on 13 June 1944, serving with HQ&HQ Co, 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. On 13 June 1944, the 2nd Battalion renewed its attack on Caumont at dawn, and by 0900 its leading elements had pushed into the town. Working alongside the 1st Battalion, the men of the 2nd secured Caumont and the high ground surrounding it, overcoming resistance from two enemy companies reported to be positioned directly in their path. It was a hard-fought advance that brought the battalion into one of the key objectives of the Normandy campaign that day. Pvt O'Brien was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
