The Story

1st Lt Allen Strauss was killed in action on 09 June 1944, serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. On 9 June 1944, the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry, was held in reserve as the regiment pushed forward, with the 2nd Battalion advancing along the right flank of the sector and the 3rd Battalion moving on the left. The regiment's goal that day was to reach the phase line originally set for D+1, meaning the fighting battalions were working to catch up to ground that had been expected to be taken a day earlier. While in reserve, the 1st Battalion would have remained positioned to support or follow this advance rather than lead it directly. 1st Lt Strauss was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
