The Story
Pfc Robert Hessong was killed in action on 12 June 1944, serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. On 12 June 1944, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry, was ordered forward on the right flank of the regiment's advance toward Caumont. By nightfall the battalion had pushed to the outskirts of the town, encountering stubborn resistance on the northern slopes as it worked toward Caumont itself. In support of this advance, American artillery shelled the town ahead of the infantry's approach. Pfc Hessong was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
