The Story
Pfc Gilkey Hall, Jr was killed in action on 07 June 1944, serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. On this day, the 3rd Battalion, 26th Infantry, was pushing south to take high ground southeast of Formigny, moving alongside the 1st Battalion of the 18th Infantry in a coordinated advance. Reports at the time indicated that resistance ahead was light, and the attack, backed by tank support, progressed well as the men neared the town. As the day wore on, however, opposition stiffened, and the battalion was ultimately ordered to halt and hold its position for the night rather than press further. Pfc Hall was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
