The Story

S/Sgt Alexander Kowalski was killed in action on 18 June 1944, serving with Battery C, 7th Field Artillery Battalion. On 18 June 1944, the 7th Field Artillery Battalion shifted back into direct support of the 16th Infantry, which had been ordered to close a gap that had opened between the Division's right flank along the 18th Infantry and the left flank of the neighboring 2nd Division. The battalion's own exact position that day was not recorded in either its after-action report or that of the Division Artillery, though it was likely displacing from the Foulognes area toward the 16th Infantry's sector to take up this new support role. That same day, the battalion absorbed a small group of replacements, one lieutenant and four enlisted men, bringing fresh personnel into the unit as it repositioned for the mission ahead. S/Sgt Kowalski was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
