Stanley G Davis

Pvt Stanley Davis was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company C, 741st Tank Battalion. On the morning of 6 June 1944, Company B launched its amphibious duplex-drive tanks from landing craft some 6,000 yards off Omaha Beach, aiming for the Easy Red sector as part of the invasion's first wave. Only five of the company's tanks managed to reach shore, two of them swimming in under their own power, and these went into action alongside the infantry landing teams of Combat Team 16, while the rest of the company and all of Company C were unaccounted for at this point in the record. In the hours that followed, crews from these surviving tanks engaged German positions on the high ground near Exit E-3, with individual sergeants credited with knocking out enemy artillery pieces and a mortar position defending the exit road. It was a costly and chaotic landing, and the fate of the missing tanks and their crews remained unresolved in the unit's account of that day.
