Hugh Ingram

T/4 Hugh Ingram was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company C, 37th Engineer Combat Battalion. On the morning of June 6, 1944, Company C's reconnaissance elements went ashore alongside Companies A and B under heavy fire, tasked with preparing transit areas inland but slowed by continued shelling on the beach and by infantry units running behind schedule. Amid the chaos, one of the company's officers took command of a leaderless infantry unit, led it up the high ground overlooking the beach, and helped force the surrender of enemy machine-gun positions. Others in the company worked through the day in full view of enemy fire, hauling drowned vehicles from the surf and filling in an anti-tank ditch that blocked the way inland, while the rest of the company, having suffered losses when their landing craft took a direct hit, regrouped and pushed forward through a cleared minefield gap to begin clearing hedgerow fields for the transit sites—work that continued into the following day.
