The Story

T/5 Leslie Speirs died on 11 June 1944, serving with 3466th Odnance Automotive Maintenance Company. By 11 June 1944, just days after the Normandy landings, the 251st Ordnance Battalion had assumed full control of its assigned duties within the Beach Maintenance Area. Its work at this stage centered on running the Brigade Motor Pool and the Class V Ammunition Dump, keeping vehicles maintained, and clearing the beachhead of bombs, mines, and booby traps left by the retreating enemy. Alongside these operational tasks, the battalion also carried on the steady administrative work needed to keep such a large support effort functioning in the days immediately following the invasion. T/5 Speirs died.
