Pvt Robert Snell died of non-battle causes on 11 June 1944, serving with 4142nd Quartermaster Service Company. By 11 June 1944, five days after coming ashore, the 4142nd Quartermaster Service Company was operating out of its bivouac area near Colleville-sur-Mer, close to the Fox Red sector of Omaha Beach. In the course of establishing itself there and supporting the buildup of men and supplies moving inland, the company had by this date sustained seven battle casualties and one additional non-battle casualty since landing. The unit's presence in this exposed coastal zone, still well within reach of enemy fire and hazards, underscored the risks faced even by service and supply troops during this early phase of the Normandy campaign. Pvt Snell died of non-battle causes.
