T/Sgt Abner Adams was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with 4042nd Quartermaster Truck Company. On D-Day, the 251st Ordnance Battalion came ashore off Omaha Beach as part of the second tide for Force "O," its personnel and equipment split among six landing craft sections plus a seventh assigned to Force "B" in the third tide. Five sections rode LCTs that touched down together along the beach around 4:30 in the afternoon, while a sixth crossed on an LST whose cargo was later transferred to a Rhino Ferry that could not reach shore until the following morning. More than half of the battalion's heavy trucks, loaded with equipment for various Brigade units, were lost during the landing, most swamped in deep water and a few destroyed by German artillery fire. One section that pushed inland that afternoon toward the supply dump area encountered sniper fire from a nearby house, and its officer, aided by two volunteers, took eleven German soldiers prisoner.
