Pfc John Roginski was killed in action on 06 June 1944, serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. On the morning of 6 June 1944, the company went ashore in the assault wave at Easy Red Beach at 0645, moving directly into devastating enemy fire sweeping the sand and bluffs. Two-thirds of the men were cut down as immediate casualties in those first minutes, yet the survivors pressed forward through the fire and fought their way to the high ground, securing the objective that opened the only exit off the beach available to the entire Fifth Corps for the next 48 hours. Their determination that day was credited as being as vital as any single unit's contribution in holding the beachhead and preventing the landing from being driven back into the sea.
