The Story

Pvt Whitsel Brown, C was killed in action on 24 June 1944, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. On 24 June 1944, the 116th Infantry Regiment was engaged in an active defense along its portion of the line in Normandy. Records at this level do not break down activity by individual company, but the regiment as a whole maintained aggressive patrolling both day and night, probing enemy positions while holding its ground. Any soldier serving with Regimental Troops that day would have been part of this broader effort to keep pressure on German forces through constant, watchful activity along the front. Pvt Brown was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
