The Story
1st Lt Edmund Duckworth was killed in action on 12 June 1944, serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. On 12 June 1944, the 2nd Battalion, as part of Combat Team 16, was held in Division Reserve under Field Order #37, ready to move on short notice to reinforce either flank or help beat back a German counterattack. By early afternoon the battalion had shifted position, and by 1605 hours it was reported in the vicinity of St. Paul du Vernay and La Butte. These movements reflect the battalion's general disposition that day rather than a detailed record of the individual company's actions. 1st Lt Duckworth was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
