The Story

S/Sgt William Langyher was killed in action on 07 June 1944, serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment. On 7 June 1944, the 3rd Battalion came ashore about 4:30 in the afternoon near St. Laurent-sur-Mer, roughly four hours behind the regiment's first two battalions. The landing was not without cost—one of L Company's landing craft was lost to mines and machine-gun fire as it approached the beach. Once ashore, the battalion took its place at the rear of the regimental column and marched inland toward the vicinity of Gruchy. S/Sgt Langyher was killed in action that day; the report does not specify the individual circumstances.
